Cougars Head To Hawaii

December 13, 2004

The SIUE women's basketball sits at 5-5 overall, 1-3 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play as the team gears up for a trip to Honolulu, Hawaii, for the Hoops-n-Surf Classic.
The Cougars will face West Texas A&M on Dec. 19 at 11 a.m. before taking on Harding on Dec. 20 at 1 p.m.
"West Texas A&M is a very good team," SIUE women's basketball coach Wendy Hedberg. "They are very athletic. We have our work cut out for us."
Hedberg needs only four more wins to reach the 400 win plateau.
The Cougars have had their ups and downs this season. SIUE is 4-2 at the Vadalabene Center this year, but the Cougars have struggled on the road going 1-2.
We have trouble putting two halves together," said Hedberg. "We look to this trip to get things turned around."
The Cougars lost a tough contest to Northern Kentucky over the weekend, falling 62-45. SIUE trailed by two at halftime, but could only manage 16 points in the second half.
We came out the second half, and scored just five baskets," said Hedberg. "You can't win playing like that."
Julianne McMillen (Pana) led all SIUE scorers with 10 points in the contest. McMillen is shooting 60 percent (41-68) from the field. She and Lindy Carey (Ft. Wayne, Ind.) have each scored in double figures six times this season.
Freshman Whitney Sykes (Pontoon Beach) has made 28 field goals, with 22 of them coming from behind the three-point line. Sykes is shooting 41 percent (22-53) from behind the arc.
"She is a good shooter," said Hedberg. "She has the ability to become an excellent passer."
Tanya Guell (Plymouth, Wis.), leads the team in scoring at 10.9 points a game. The Cougars are shooting 73.2 percent from the free throw line as a team.
SIUE is 4-0 this season when they hold their opponents under 40 percent shooting.
When the Cougars return from Hawaii they will be back in Great Lakes Valley Conference action on Dec. 30 at Bellarmine.
