BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – The SIUE men's cross country team has won the Ohio Valley Conference Team Sportsmanship Award for the 2018 men's cross country season.
The award is voted on by the cross country student-athletes and coaches from the OVC and is given to the teams that best exhibit the standards of sportsmanship and ethical behavior as outlined by the conference and NCAA.
"It is an honor to be recognized by our peers in the OVC," SIUE Assistant Coach Kayla Brown said. "The team always competes with utmost class, and their recognition exhibits how they lead with high character."
The SIUE men's cross country team includes Kevin Campbell (Memphis, Tennessee), Liam O'Connell (Grayslake, Illinois), Matthew O'Connor (Elgin, Illinois), Ben Scamihorn (Marshall, Illinois), Landon Skelly (Chatham, Illinois), Joseph Stone (Newton, Illinois) and Austin Woodard (Philo, Illinois).
"The recipients of the OVC Team Sportsmanship awards should accept this award with great pride for their fellow competitors have made it clear their teams exemplify the best in intercollegiate athletics," added Betch DeBauche, OVC Commissioner. "In receiving this prestigious honor other competitors are saying these student-athletes compete with class, respect their opponents and value fair play. That is quite a compliment as those are all traits that will lead to true victories throughout the course of life."
This year marks the 14th season the team sportsmanship awards have been given. The Belmont women's cross country team was honored this season alongside the SIUE men. It marks the first sportsmanship awards for both programs.
