MAC Wrestling Championships Set for Friday, Saturday

NORFOLK, Va. – SIUE wrestling is headed to its first-ever Mid-American Conference Wrestling Championships set for Friday and Saturday at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.

The eight-team tournament features teams from SIUE, defending champion Missouri, Northern Illinois, Central Michigan, Ohio, Buffalo, Kent State and host Old Dominion.

SIUE's Christian Dulaney earned SIUE's best seed of the tournament as the No. 2 seed at 197 pounds. Both Tyshawn Williams (149) and Justin Ruffin (157) were tabbed as No. 4 seeds.

SIUE NOTES
--Williams (149) and Nate Higgins (165) qualified for the NCAA Championships last season as champions at their respective weight classes at last season's Southern Conference Championships.
--Ruffin (157) is a true freshman and is ranked 25th in the RPI.
--Colton McKiernan (285) is a true freshman and led the team in victories with 19.
--McKiernan's older brother Jake is a senior on this year's team in the same weight class. Jake was battling back from injuries and won his final collegiate match with a pin at Wisconsin.
--SIUE recorded its first-ever MAC dual victory Jan. 11 with a 20-16 home win over Buffalo.
--Head Coach Jeremy Spates is in his sixth season at SIUE. He coached Division I All-American Jake Residori (174/2016-17) at SIUE.
--Spates previously coached as an assistant at Cornell, where he was instrumental in development of four-time national champion Kyle Dake
--Spates was a 2004 All-American at Missouri under Coach Brian Smith
--Spates' father is former Oklahoma Head Coach Jack Spates
