ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Jake Residori blazed another new trail for SIUE wrestling as he was named the No. 1 seed for the 174-pound weight class at the Arby's Southern Conference Championships.
The Arby's SoCon Wrestling Championships will take place Saturday on the campus of UNC Asheville at Kimmel Arena. This year will be the 78th annual SoCon Wrestling Championship.
"If we go out there and wrestle the way we are capable, we will have good results," said SIUE Head Coach Jeremy Spates.
Residori, 25-12 this season, became SIUE's first wrestler to be selected as a top seed at the league tournament. Residori advanced to the finals of last season's SoCon Tournament.
Angelo Silvestro, at 141 pounds, and Jake Tindle, at 197 pounds, were tabbed No. 4 seeds in their respective weight classes. All of the seeds for the tournament were based on votes by the league's coaches.
"We've continued to work hard all season. We've lifted all season. We've also worked on the mental side of it as well," said Spates.
Every champion from the SoCon Championship will move on to NCAA Division I Championship, which will be held March 19-21 at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis. There are a handful of extra wrestlers from the SoCon Championship who will move on based on certain weight classes or "wild cards" handed out by the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee.
As for the conference's team competition, Chattanooga will be looking for a fifth straight league title.
