EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The SIUE wrestling team traveled to the University Freestyle Nationals this past weekend in Akron, Ohio, to compete with some of the most prominent wrestling programs in the nation.
"For our first freestyle experience, we did pretty well," said SIUE Head Coach Jeremy Spates. "We had a lot of guys who were inexperienced in this style. I was really happy to have our guys competing and training for it. It was a great experience for them to compete in such a huge national event."
All wrestlers within the university age range were eligible to compete in the event, and the top eight in each group qualified for University World Team Trials.
"For us this is the first time we have freestyled in a number of years. We brought nine of our 20 guys. We were pretty excited to have almost half of our team wrestling in the offseason."
Residori, who was previously sidelined with a dislocated elbow, returned to the mat and performed well.
"Jake came out and looked really good. It was a big stepping stone to get him ready for next year," added Spates.
