EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE's David Devine will be in competition Thursday at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in Oklahoma City, Okla.
Devine, the heavyweight (285-pound) champion at the Southern Conference Championships, is among 33 entrants at his weight class. His first-round opponent is 14th-seeded Jonathan Gingrich of Penn State. Gingrich placed sixth at the Big Ten Championships.
The first-round matches are scheduled to start Thursday at 11 a.m. CT at Chesapeake Energy Arena with the championship finals set for Saturday.
Live video coverage is available online at http://www.espn3.com. There will be multiple streams of the event, including each mat at the championships.
SIUE Head Coach Jeremy Spates said Devine worked on the fundamentals during practice leading up to the tournament.
"I think David is going to go out and represent us well," said Spates. "He is really wrestling well and is excited for this opportunity so I think he's going to go out and put on a show for our crowd."
This also is the first appearance at the national championships for Spates as a head coach. Spates said he first attended the national championships as a fan in 1992 and also has been there as a competitor and as an assistant coach.
"It's a different experience each time," said Spates.
