EVANSTON, Ill. - Connor McMahon scored 5.5 team points for SIUE at the 51st annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championship.
McMahon, wrestling at 165 pounds, won his first match of the day with a 2 minute, 25 second pin over Maryland's Tyler Manion. He was then defeated by top-seeded Steven Monk, of North Dakota State.
In wrestlebacks, McMahon advanced on a medical forfeit from Illinois' Matt Nora and was ousted from the tournament by Indiana's Ryan LeBlanc 12-2.
"He came out his first match and dominated," said SIUE Head Coach Jeremy Spates. "He did a good job today. We were looking for him to get a few matches under his belt since he is just coming off an injury."
SIUE's three other wrestlers - Deshoun White, Jake Residori, and Patrick Myers - all were defeated in their first two matches of the day. Many of the matches were close.
"We have to find ways to win those close matches," Spates said.
SIUE continues action next Saturday at Northern Illinois with a 3 p.m. match in DeKalb.
