SPARTANBURG, S.C. – SIUE 174-pounder Jake Residori has been named the Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week for all competition from Dec. 4-10. The selection is made by the league office.
Residori went 4-1 on the week to help the Cougars to a 3-2 record at the Hoosier Duals in Bloomington, Ind. SIUE topped VMI on Saturday, 23-14, in its SoCon opener before topping Northern Colorado 25-17 later in the day to win consecutive duals against Division I competition for the first time since the 1991-92 season. West Virginia handed the Cougars a 27-3 setback in their final match Saturday.
SIUE split Sunday's action, downing Drexel 26-12 and falling to host Indiana 28-9.
Residori turned in a dominant weekend for the Cougars, starting with a 15-0 technical fall over VMI's Timmy Davidson. Residori followed that up with a 10-2 major decision over Josh VanTine of Northern Colorado before dropping his only contest of the weekend, a 3-1 decision to West Virginia's Bubba Scheffel.
The sophomore from Shorewood, Ill., bounced back with a pair of wins on Sunday, posting a 16-5 major decision over Drexel's Kevin Maytas before wrapping up his week with a 10-8 win over the Indiana's Nate Jackson.
The weekly award is the first of Residori's career and just the second in program history for SIUE, which is in its second year in the SoCon.
The Cougars (3-6, 1-0 SoCon) return to action with a dual at Northwestern on Sunday before closing out 2013 at the Midlands Championships in Chicago, Ill., on Dec. 29-30.
