EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The SIUE wrestling team will be busy this weekend with five dual meets, including the Southern Conference opener, at the Hoosier Duals in Bloomington, Ind.
SIUE Head Coach Jeremy Spates and his wrestling team will compete Saturday and Sunday at University Gym on the Indiana campus.
The Cougars begin action Saturday at 9 a.m. CT with their first SoCon meet of the season against VMI. That match will be followed by duals against Northern Colorado at 11 a.m. and West Virginia at 1 p.m.
On Sunday, SIUE faces off against Drexel at 10 a.m. CT followed by host Indiana at noon.
Spates said the biggest challenge for the five-match stretch is health.
"Right now, we've patched our lineup together. If we keep everybody healthy, we'll be in good shape," Spates said.
Jake Residori, a sophomore, leads the Cougars with a 6-3 overall record that includes a third-place finish at the Joe Parisi Open.
Some of the ranked wrestlers competing this weekend include Indiana 157-pounder Taylor Walsh (7th/15-0), Indiana heavyweight Adam Chalfant (8th/9-1), Drexel 197-pounder Brandon Palik (14th/6-2), and West Virginia 133-pounder Nathan Pennesi (20th/5-1).
"It's always good when you have a chance to wrestle a ranked opponent because it helps you in the RPI if you get a win. That can pump you up as far as national qualification," Spates said.
