EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE wrestling collected four individual victories Sunday but lost a 30-15 decision to 20th-ranked Purdue at the Vadalabene Center.
It was the first regular season home dual meet for first-year Head Coach Jeremy Spates.
"We actually wrestling tough overall. We won almost half the matches," said Spates.
SIUE freshman Dakota Leach electrified the fans in the opening match with a fall over Camden Eppert in 2 minutes, 16 seconds. Leach put six team points on the board for the Cougars with the victory over Eppert, who entered the weekend ranked 18th nationally at 125 pounds.
SIUE heavyweight David Devine closed out the match with a thrilling 2-1 victory. After giving up an escape to Purdue's Alex White in the second period, Devine chose down in the third period and gained a reversal with 30 seconds left in the match.
After winning five straight matches Saturday, Jake Residori continued his winning streak with an 8-3 decision over Andy Hoselton at 174 pounds.
Deshoun White scored an escape and a takedown in the final period at 184 pounds and collected a 3-2 win over Andrew Wiseman.
Purdue, 2-1, took advantage of a forfeit and three falls to push back the Cougars. Braden Atwood led the charge with a 21 second pin over Chris Johnson at 197 pounds.
"I still saw some things that we need to work on to get better, and we need to get healthy," added Spates.
Next up for the Cougars, 0-4, is a five-match event at Bloomington, Ind., Dec. 7-8. The Cougars open the Southern Conference season Dec. 7 that day against VMI as well as face Northern Colorado and West Virginia. On Dec. 8, the Cougars take on Drexel and host Indiana.
