EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville wrestling gets its first taste of competing at home Sunday when it plays host to Findlay, Northern Illinois and Northwestern at the Student Fitness Center.
SIUE Head Coach David Ray said the three teams coming to SIUE are of good quality and will make for some good wrestling.
SIUE wrestles only Findlay and Northwestern at the Cougar Duals. SIUE begins with a noon dual against Findlay and follows that up with a 2 p.m. matchup against Northwestern. Northern Illinois wrestles Northwestern at noon and then mixes it up with Findlay at 2 p.m. The Cougars and Northern Illinois meet later in the season on Feb. 12 at SIUE.
The Cougars plan to have a solid lineup in place for the double dual. Junior Paul Myers will make his Cougar home debut at 125 pounds. John Petrov will move up a weight class to compete at 133. Either Lawrence Blackful or Nick Capozzoli will wrestle at 141. They will be followed by Derrick Pousson at 149, Steve Ross at 157, Gabe Hocum at 165, Deshoun White or Michael Dace at 174, Jordon Bakley at 184, Robert Cooney at 197 and David Devine at 285.
Ray said the Cougars will have to have the mentality of one match at a time and wrestling with the thought that Sunday's match is the toughest they will see all season.
"It's going to be a tough meet from the start," said Ray.
"Findlay is a well-coached, sound Division II program," he added. "And Northwestern is pretty solid from top to bottom."
Northwestern has four wrestlers ranked in the top 20 by Intermat.
