EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. - The dual meet season continues Sunday as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville wrestling travels to Brookings, S.D.
The Cougars are set to face off against Northern State at 2 p.m. and South Dakota State at 4 p.m. South Dakota State is an NCAA Division I member while Northern State competes at the Division II level. SIUE is coming off the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas where the team placed 33rd out of 36 teams.
"It was a good experience and opened our eyes on the techniques we need to work on," said SIUE Head Coach David Ray.
SIUE has been making technical errors, Ray noted, and Associate Head Coach Alan Grammer he has had the team working to correct those mistakes in the practice room. For example, Ray said a handful of wrestlers have made good attempts at takedowns only to finish the moves in an ineffective position.
"We're looking for consistency and for wrestlers to improve. We need to wrestle with confidence," said Ray.
The Cougars will send a full lineup to Brookings for the double dual. The lineup includes John Petrov at 125 pounds; Cameron Vance at 133 pounds; Lawrence Blackful at 141 pounds; Derrick Pousson at 149 pounds; Steve Ross at 157 pounds; Gabe Hocum at 165 pounds; Deshoun White at 174 pounds; Jordon Bakler at 184 pounds; Robert Cooney at 197 pounds; and David Devine at 285 pounds.
Ross and Devine currently lead the team with five victories each. Devine also has a team-leading three pins.
Ray said his team has to focus on trying to work on scoring points from every position.
"We've got to be more physical on our feet," said Ray.
After the trip to South Dakota, SIUE returns home for two matches at the Student Fitness Center on Dec. 19. SIUE will entertain Findlay and Northwestern.
