YPSILANTI, Mich. - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville wrestling doubled its win total for the season in one day with a pair of dual match victories Saturday.
SIUE improved to 4-13 overall with a 21-12 victory over Tiffin and a 41-6 drubbing of Oakland. The Cougars dropped the second session of the day to host Eastern Michigan 40-9.
All four of Tiffin's wins were close decisions. SIUE's John Petrov set the tone for the Cougars win a close victory, a 11-9 win over Jordan Duckett at 133 pounds.
SIUE picked up two victories in the match against EMU. In his only match of the day, Isaac Ervin pinned EMU's Justin Joseph in 6:05. Dace followed Ervin at 174 pounds and blanked Chris Eggert 5-0.
SIUE Head Coach David Ray said the Cougars did not start well but surprised EMU in Ervin's match when Joseph essentially pinned himself.
"It was one of those matches," added Ray.
SIUE won all nine of the contested matched against Oakland, which collected a forfeit at 125 pounds. Nick Capozzoli earned the quickest pin against Oakland in 2:49 over Cody O'Keefe at 141 pounds. Derrick Pousson added a third-period fall in 6:10 against Chuck Edwards at 6:10.
"A lot of guys wrestled up to their potential so that was good," said Ray.
The Cougars now return home for a pair of dial matches Thursday at the Vadalabene Center. SIUE entertains Truman State at 6:30 p.m. and Rend Lake at 8 p.m.
