SIUE Wrestling Program Will Return for 2003-2004

May 28, 2003

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville has come to an agreement to allow a consortium of alumni and supporters to fund the intercollegiate wrestling program for the 2003-2004 season.
The group working to save the Cougar wrestling program has formally committed to pay the expenses for the 2003-2004 season with the understanding that an external funding plan will be established to perpetuate funding for the future. The specific amount and deadlines for raising those funds will be established in future meetings. The continuation of the program after the 2003-2004 season will be dependent upon the committed external funding. SIUE Director of Athletics Brad Hewitt said this agreement creates a win-win situation for both the SIUE wrestling supporters and the Cougar Athletics Department.
"The support for SIUE wrestling since we made the announcement to discontinue the program demonstrates a great loyalty and commitment to SIUE," said Hewitt. "We've said all along we did not want across-the-board cuts which would hurt the overall athletics program. While this is a temporary solution, it gives SIUE's wrestling community and supporters an opportunity to save a program for which they've shown so much passion, and also does not negatively impair the rest of the athletics department."
The program will remain with the SIUE athletics department and continue to hold NCAA Division II affiliation. Previous scholarship commitments will be honored. However, no new awards will be granted until funding is secured.
Financial support can be sent to the SIUE Foundation for the SIUE Wrestling Development Account.
