Cougars Shine at SIUE Gateway Classic

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The SIUE track and field team wrapped up the SIUE Gateway Classic Friday, with multiple Cougars winning events, and hitting personal and season bests.

The Classic was the regular season finale for the Cougars. SIUE recognized its four seniors on the team in Nichyria Byrd, Brittney Gibbs, Matt O'Connor and Ben Scamihorn.

"What a great day," SIUE Head Coach Scott Block said. "To have all of the families, friends and alumni out was an awesome experience."

Byrd hit a season best in the women's long jump with a mark of 19-9.75. That jump is the best mark in the Ohio Valley Conference this season. In the women's triple jump, Gibbs took first with a mark of 40-9.5.

O'Connor placed first in the men's 800m with a time of 1:53.66, with SIUE's Landon Skelly taking second (1:55.61).

The SIUE men's 4x100m relay team (Collin Brown, Conor McCarthy, Robert Nuzzo and DeVonte Tincher) placed first with a season best time of 41.71.

Carinne Parker placed first in both the women's 100m (12.44) and the 200m (25.26).

SIUE's Justin White took first in the men's high jump with a mark of 6-3.5. Conor McCarthy, Tincher and Logan Webb placed first, second and third respectively for the Cougars in the long jump. Webb also placed first in the men's triple jump (46-11.75).

Kassidy Dexheimer placed first in the women's 1500m (4:44.45) and Keri Burmester took first in the women's 3K (10.37.77) with a 17-second PR. 

John Barnes took third in the men's discus with a toss of 152-1 for the Cougars, while SIUE's Alexis Hutchins placed second in the women's shot put (44-11.5).

"We had some great performances in a great environment," Block added. "This sets us up nicely for the OVC Championships next week."

The Cougars will participate in the OVC Outdoor Championships in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, May 9-11.
