Two OVC Titles Highlight Day One of Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The SIUE track and field teams wrapped up day one of the Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships Wednesday. SIUE's John Barnes and Nichyria Byrd both took home OVC titles on the day.

The Championships are being held at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama.

Barnes won his second straight OVC men's weight throw title with a toss of 64 feet, 6.50 inches. His mark is second all-time for the Cougars. Austin Lynch placed fifth (60-0.25) in the weight throw.

Byrd won her second straight OVC women's indoor long jump championship. Her PR leap of 19-4 is second all-time for SIUE in the event.

The Cougars also picked up a second place finish, with DeVonte Tincher placing second in the men's long jump with a mark of 22-5.75. Tincher also qualified for the 60 meter final tomorrow with a season best time of 7.11.

In the men's 800, SIUE's Matt O'Connor (1:54.62) and Joseph Stone (1:55.44) qualified for the 800m final.

OVC Freshman Athlete of the year Ethan Poston placed seventh for the Cougars in the men's long jump (21-08.75). He is set to compete in the high jump tomorrow.
