NORMAL, Ill. – The SIUE track and field teams wrapped up the Redbird Invite Saturday. The SIUE men's throwing team had multiple impressive performances. The meet took place at the Redbird Track Complex on the campus of Illinois State.
Cold temperatures and rainy conditions plagued the invite, but the Cougars fought through and had many solid performances.
"It was another cold, wet and windy meet," SIUE Head Coach Scott Block said. "We figured out a way to make it work for us, though. We had a few personal records and a lot of individual wins."
SIUE's Martinus Mitchell placed first in the men's discus with a mark of 148 feet, 10 inches. This is the second meet in a row that Mitchell has placed first in the discus. He also placed third in the shot put (52-5.25).
"The men's throw crew is finding their rhythm and I am excited to see how they perform these next few weeks," added Block.
The SIUE jumpers had another successful meet. Brittney Gibbs won the women's triple jump with a mark of 39 feet, 4.5 inches and Nichyria Byrd placed third (18-8) in the women's long jump. For the men, Julian Harvey took second in the high jump with a season best jump of 6-11.5.
In the sprints, DeVonte Tincher finished second in the men's 100m with a PR time of 10.74 seconds, placing him fifth all-time in SIUE history. Collin Brown ran a lifetime best in the 200m with a time of 22.07. Brown also placed eighth in the 400m (50.25).
For the men, Austin Woodard won the 3K with a PR time of 8:58.34. That is Woodard's first collegiate win.
The Cougars will be back in action April 20-21 at the Tom Botts Invitational in Columbia, Missouri.
