EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE men's and women's track and field heads to the Gladstein Invitational hosted by Indiana for a two-day meet Friday and Saturday.
The meet kicks off Friday at 11 a.m. CT and Saturday at 9:00 a.m. CT.
"We approach the multi-day meet as an opportunity to see some great performances," said Interim Head Coach Scott Block. "The multi-day format allows the athletes to have more focus on each event and allow for more recovery between those events."
Two Cougars are currently leading the Ohio Valley Conference in their respective events. Darius Smith, who broke his own school record last weekend, leads the OVC in the 60 meters with a time of 6.79. Julian Harvey leads the OVC in both the long jump (24-1.5) and high jump (6-9.5). Both were chosen as the Athlete of the Week for their performances at the Missouri Invite Jan. 15.
"It is great to have athletes leading the league at any point in the season but there is a lot of season left," said Block. "The rest of the conference are seeing the event leaders and will be trying to take their spots, so we are looking for our athletes to continue to improve. A competitive meet like the Gladstein Invitational will help facilitate good performances."
Freshman Nichyria Byrd is coming off of a performance at the Missouri Invite where she won both the triple jump (40-4.75) and the long jump (19-0.5). She is currently second and third, respectively, in the OVC in those events.
Outside of the Gladstein Invitational, a small contingent of athletes will be competing at the John Craft Invite hosted by Eastern Illinois Saturday. Competition for this meet begins at 9 a.m.
