CHARLESTON, Ill. – SIUE men's and women's track and field capped a successful first indoor meet that saw 17 athletes mark 19 personal bests.
"I was excited about how today's meet went," said Interim Head Coach Scott Block. "The athletes were clearly extremely prepared and I want to thank my assistant coaches for getting them ready."
Among the top finishers were Jessica Oranika, recorded a first place finish in the 600 meter run with a personal best of 1 minute, 34.13 seconds.
Freshman Nichyria Byrd, competing in her first meet as a Cougar, recorded a first place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 38 feet, 0.75 inches. She also tallied a personal best in the 60 meters at 8.15
On the men's side, first-place finishers included Ben Scamihorn, who ran his best time in the mile, completing the four laps in 4:22.15. Matt O'Connor added a personal best of his own and a third place finish in the mile with a time of 4:30.07.
Adding to the success of the distance team was Keith Meyer, winning the 3000 meter race in 8:47.92.
Bobby Kaluza added yet another personal best and first-place finish for the Cougars in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.31.
Deborrah Blackburn added a personal best in the high jump at 5-5.75, finishing third.
The throwers on both men's and women's team contributed to the team's points of the day, including Megan Lauzon who recorded personal bests in both the shot put (41-6) and the weight throw (54-7.5), placing ninth and third, respectively.
Claire Nolan, competing in her first meet as a Cougar after transferring from Iowa, marked personal bests in both the shot put (43-7) and weight throw (47-3.5) earning sixth and ninth place finishes, respectively.
Completing the personal bests of the day were Conradette King in the 800 (2:27.49), Francesca Sikorski in the 600 (1:38.28), Ivory Cassell in the 60-meter dash (7.78), and Harvey in the 60-meter dash (7.18).
"Getting this meet under their belt will be a great way to send them away for holiday break and hopefully give them motivation to continue to build off of," said Block.
The Cougars return to action in 2016 at the Missouri Invite Jan. 15.
