EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE men's and women's track and field head to the EIU Early Bird Invitational Friday for a one-day meet to open their indoor season. The meet begins at 2 p.m. in Lantz Field House.
This meet marks the first for Interim Head Coach Scott Block, who will take on this meet no differently than he has in the past.
"My approach going into this meet will be the same it has always been, feeling out and learning where the athletes are physically and mentally," said Block.
The competition is the first December meet in more than six years for the Cougars.
"I think going into break with a meet under their belt is important and can be a great motivator for a long holiday break," said Block.
SIUE has several athletes returning who were NCAA first round qualifiers, including LaDonna Caston and Jessica Oranika on the women's side and Darius Smith on the men's side. Also returning for the men is Julian Harvey, who is a two-time Ohio Valley Conference champion in the high jump and tied for the SIUE record.
"I expect the athletes to be competitive and in the moment," said Block. "This meet is more about figuring out where the athletes are mentally and not about the time or distance."
