MURRAY, Ky. – SIUE men's tennis improved to 2-1 in Ohio Valley Conference play Saturday with a 4-2 road victory at Murray State.
Jack Desse recorded the clinching point for the Cougars with a 6-2, 6-7, 6-2 win over Javiar Villar at No. 6 singles.
"Jack has been playing really well," said SIUE Head Coach Jason Coomer. "It came down to his match today, and he put the team on his back to help get the win."
Desse now leads the Cougars with 11 singles victories this season.
"We had another tough match today, and we fell on the other side of the coin," said Coomer. "It was a hard fought match by both teams."
The Cougars gained control of the match early by collecting the doubles point. Desse and Matthew Hutchinson downed Schrott and Marcel Ueltzhoeffer 6-1 at No. 1 doubles while Tristan Houle and Gaffigan swept past Trosic and David Hess at No. 2 doubles 6-3.
"Tristan and Patrick came out on fire today," said Coomer. "They were clicking on all cylinders and look really strong on the court. It's nice to have doubles teams that are interchangeable in the lineup. Jack and Matt also showed today they can step up to the challenge."
SIUE improved to 6-10 overall. Murray State dropped to 2-14 overall and 0-4 in the OVC.
The Cougars begin a four-match homestand April 1 with a 3:30 p.m. match against Tennessee State.
