EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE men's soccer scored three goals in the first eight minutes Friday, scored four in the first 30 and held on for a 4-3 win over Evansville in the season's home opener at Korte Stadium.
"It was great to get a win and great to see multiple goal scorers," SIUE Head Coach Cale Wassermann said. "We're happy to get the win."
Lachlan McLean opened the scoring unloaded a shot from near the top of the box in the second minute of play. Jorge Gonzalez was fouled at the edge of the box and converted the ensuing free kick in the fifth minute to double the Cougars' lead. True freshman Jacob Bilyeu picked off a pass in the eighth minute before burying a shot high in the left corner to make it 3-0. Vincent Jackson made it 4-0 in the 30th minute after taking a feed from Mathias Krigbaum.
The Purple Aces got in the board in the 36th minute when Ryan Harris put a ball in from the near post over SIUE goalkeeper Noah Heim. That made it 4-1 SIUE at half.
Evansville got goals from Nikosi Graham, on a free kick in the 66th minute, and Filip Johansson in the 81st minute.
"When you get a lead like that a couple of things happen," Wassermann said. "It's a challenge. The other team can start to take more risks. We were a little impatient and we let Evansville hang around. They're a strong team."
The Purple Aces outshot SIUE 12-8 for the game.
"They came back at us a little bit, but luckily we were strong enough to hang on," Wasserman added. "We had a lot of chances and we did a lot of good things tonight. This is a team that has high expectations and one of those expectations is to control games once you have the lead."
SIUE was much more efficient in its shooting, scoring four goals on just five shots in the first half.
"We're happy to get the win and we know there are a lot of things we need to keep working on to move forward."
SIUE welcomes Saint Louis to Edwardsville for the Bronze Boot game Friday beginning at 7:30 p.m.
