THIS WEEK: SIUE opens the 2019 season with a trip to the pair of Big Ten Michigan schools. 
 
FOR OPENERS: SIUE is 4-5-2 in season openers since the return to Division I in 2008. 
 
LAST SEASON: SIUE finished 2018 at 9-5-4. After opening the season 9-1-2 in their first 12 games, the Cougars struggled to an 0-4-2 finish to the season. SIUE was 6-2-1 at home and 3-3-3 on the road. 
 
AT THE HELM: Cale Wassermann begins his first season as SIUE's head coach. He is the eighth head coach in program history. 
 
WELCOME BACK: Wassermann returns to East Lansing after spending the last four seasons as an assistant and recruiting coordinator at Michigan State. Wassermann was on staff with the Spartans for each of the last two meetings with the Cougars. 
 
SERIES STUFF: The Cougars have met Michigan State six previous time. The two teams opened the 2017 season at Korte Stadium, where the Spartans prevailed 1-0. SIUE ousted Michigan State on penalty kicks in the first round of the 2016 NCAA tournament on its way to a Sweet 16 appearance. The Cougars have never played Michigan in men's soccer. 
 
SCORING LEADERS: SIUE's top two scorers from a season ago return for the Cougars. Lachlan McLean finished fourth in the Mid-American Conference with 23 points, coming on nine goals and five assists. His nine goals were third in the MAC and were the most at SIUE since Christian Volesky scored nine during the 2012 season. Jorge Gonzalez scored eight goals and added an assist. He was second on the team and tied for sixth in the MAC in scoring at 17 points. His eight goals also tied for sixth.  
 
BETWEEN THE PIPES: Junior goalkeeper Noah Heim played all 18 games in goal as a sophomore. Heim's six shutouts and 3.33 saves per game each ranked second in the MAC. He finished with a 1.21 goals against average which ranked third in the MAC. Redshirt sophomore Lluís  Martorell has seen significant time in goal during SIUE's preseason. This is Martorell's third season in the program, but he has not appeared in a regular season game. 
 
ROSTER OVERHAUL: SIUE lost seven players who appeared in at least 11 games last season. The Cougars have nine players that are playing their first season in the program. That group includes seven true freshmen. 
 
ONE-GOAL GAMES: SIUE was 7-2 in one-goal games in 2018. 
 
PRO TRADITION: More than 75 former SIUE players have gone on to play professional soccer.
