EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – A crowd of more than 2,000 was on hand to see SIUE men's soccer open the 2019 campaign Friday at Korte Stadium. The Cougars and Golden Hurricane played to a 1-1 tie before going to a penalty kick shootout. Tulsa prevailed after eight rounds of penalties.
The Golden Hurricane carried a 1-0 lead into the second half thanks to a 17th minute goal by Alejandro Chavez.
SIUE fought back to level the score in the 89th minute. Danel Cavillo blasted home a free kick from the top of the 18-yard box.
"It was a great crowd and was exciting for us to score late in the game," SIUE Head Coach Cale Wassermann said. "We pre-planned the penalty shootout. It is great practice for us, but also good entertainment for the crowd. You want to come out on the right end of it."
SIUE outshot Tulsa 15-9. The Cougars finished with a 9-3 advantage in the second half.
"I really liked the second half," Wassermann added. "The biggest thing for me was we made some adjustments at halftime. To make the adjustments we did and for us to implement them that quickly made me extremely happy."
SIUE goalies Lluis Martorell and Noah Heim split time in goal. Martorell played the first half and also the shootout.
"Our goal this early in preseason is to build people's fitness as we start to implement our tactics," Wassermann said. "Tulsa is a classy program and they challenged us. It will help us get better."
