EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE men's soccer Head Coach Cale Wassermann has announced the addition of Assistant Coach Stephen Gorton to his staff.
"We are thrilled to have Stephen joining the program," Wassermann said. "This was an intensive national search where we identified a number of great candidates. With Stephen's experience as both a head coach and an assistant, he understands what it takes to take a program to the next level."
Gorton comes to SIUE after spending seven seasons in various roles, including associate head coach and recruiting coordinator at Oakland University.
"I would like to thank Coach Wasserman and the rest of the hiring committee for the opportunity at SIUE," Gorton said. "I will always be grateful for my time at Oakland University, the players, and the staff that I had the opportunity to work with."
As recruiting coordinator, Gorton brought in multiple four-star recruiting classes and multiple All-Conference and All-Region selections. Gorton helped the Golden Grizzlies to regular season conference titles in both the Horizon and Summit League and was an integral part in the team's two Horizon League Tournament championships and NCAA Tournament appearances in 2014 and 2015. Following the 2015 season, Gorton was named as one of CollegeSoccerNews.com's Top 12 Assistant Coaches.
Prior to his time at Oakland, Gorton was the head coach at Garden City Community College in Garden City, Kansas, from 2007-2011. He amassed an overall record of 56-21-3 in his time there. Gorton guided the Broncbusters to a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Final Four, two regional finals, four regional semifinals, and coached numerous All-Americans. He earned recognition as the NJCAA Plains District Coach of the Year in 2008 and was a twice a nominee for National Coach of the Year.
Gorton began his coaching career as an assistant at Western Illinois during the 2004 season. The Leathernecks won the Summit League Tournament and appeared in the NCAA Tournament during his time in Macomb, Illinois.
During his playing career at Western Illinois, Gorton was named to the All-Summit League team and selected to the NSCAA All-North Region and NSCAA All-America team.
The native of Mattawan, Michigan, earned his bachelor's in recreation administration from Western Illinois. He holds a USSF B coaching license.
"To get a guy in here who can jump straight into all aspects of the program with great ideas and execution as well as a great temperament and ability to connect with players is vital," Wassermann added. "I am excited to have Stephen joining the staff and believe he will fit in extremely well with what we are doing here in Edwardsville."
"During my time at Oakland, we were able to do some special things which I will always carry with me," Gorton said. "In joining SIUE, I feel very fortunate to be a part of a program with such a rich college soccer tradition. After speaking to Coach Wassermann about SIUE and his plans for the program, it became very clear that we both strive for the same goals. The future is bright for the soccer program, and I am eager to get rolling."
