TONIGHT: The Cougars look to build upon one of the best starts to a season in the Division I era. This is only SIUE's third road game of the year. A five-game home stand recently came to an end.
HISTORIC SERIES RESUMED: One of the most storied rivalries in college soccer was reestablished Friday as SIUE earned a draw at Saint Louis. It was the first regular season meeting for the two schools since 1995. Regularly a well-attended game, the meeting was held in downtown St. Louis at Busch Stadium II from 1972-1986. The largest crowd in NCAA history was a Bronze Boot affair, when 22,512 saw the Billikens and Cougars play at Busch Stadium on Oct. 30, 1980.
LAST TIME OUT: The Cougars and Billikens tied 1-1 in front of 4,903 at Hermann Stadium on the Saint Louis campus. Lachlan McLean scored the goal for SIUE.
SCORING LEADERS: McLean and Jorge Gonzalez are 1-2 in scoring for SIUE again this year. McLean has three goals and three assists for nine points which is second in the Mid-American Conference. Gonzalez has four goals for eight points, which is third.
AT THE HELM: Cougars Head Coach Mario Sanchez is in his fourth season in charge of men's soccer. Sanchez sports a 33-20-12 record in three full seasons at SIUE. In his seventh season overall as a head coach, Sanchez is 57-61-21.
SERIES STUFF: SIUE and Valparaiso have met each of the last two years in Edwardsville. They played to a scoreless draw in 2016. Last season, SIUE scored a 1-0 overtime win over the Crusaders.
