EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE men's soccer wrapped up its preseason schedule Friday playing Cincinnati to a scoreless draw in front of 1,786 at Korte Stadium.

The game was part of SIUE's Freshman Experience for first-year students who will begin class next week.

"It was what we wanted to see," SIUE Head Coach Mario Sanchez said. "This was a real good game, a good start for us. Now we just have to build on it."

The Cougars outshot the Bearcats 12-7 and creating several scoring opportunities, particularly on restarts.

"You want to make sure you're generating opportunities and we did through the run of play and on restarts," Sanchez said.

Noah Heim and Lluís Martorell both saw time in goal for SIUE. Each made two saves on the way to the clean sheet.

"Ultimately, it was good to get the shutout," Sanchez said. "It was a total team effort."

SIUE now has a week before beginning the regular season on the road at Memphis Aug. 24.

"Now that we have a pretty good idea of what the kids can do, it's just about refining it and getting better," Sanchez said. "We open on a really tough game: away to Memphis. Historically it's a very difficult place to play and it will be a great test for us."
