SIUE (7-8-1, 2-2-0) vs.
West Virginia (8-5-4, 0-2-2)
Sat., Nov. 3, 7 p.m.
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE men's soccer plays host to West Virginia in its final regular season contest of the 2017 season. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Saturday at Korte Stadium.
SIUE Athletics is teaming with local Boy Scout troops to offer fans free admission to the game with a canned-food donation.
Saturday also is senior night. The team will recognize six departing seniors prior to kickoff.
"We're anticipating a special night," SIUE Head Coach Mario Sanchez said. "To have a school like West Virginia in here is part of why we joined the Mid-American Conference."
SIUE is 7-8-1 overall and 2-2-0 in the MAC. The Cougars already have clinched a spot in next week's MAC tournament. Western Michigan secured the No. 1 seed and the right to host the tournament Nov. 10 and 12.
"We want to continue to build momentum for the team as a whole heading into the semifinals," Sanchez said.
Sanchez said the Cougars' focus has been offense in preparing for West Virginia.
"We defended well against Western Michigan, but we lacked in the attack," he said. "We worked on being more assertive in the attack this week. We have the pieces. The story this year has been putting the pieces together consistently for 90 minutes."
He added that offense may be the key to the match.
"It's going to be a game where whichever team is more assertive in the attack is probably going to prevail," Sanchez said.
The Mountaineers are 8-5-4 overall but are winless (0-2-2) in MAC play.
"They're a good team," Sanchez said. "They are very similar to us. They keep the ball very well and they are very athletic. They have struggled to score goals, especially in conference. They're technical, well-coached and organized."
