EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE men's soccer swept the Missouri Valley Conference weekly awards following a dramatic 1-0 overtime win over Loyola Saturday earning the Cougars their first-ever MVC regular season title.
SIUE posted back-to-back shutouts defeating Eastern Illinois Tuesday night 2-0. The Cougars have won eight consecutive games.
Sophomore forward Devyn Jambga (Harare, Zimbabwe) was selected as the Offensive Player of the Week while sophomore goalkeeper Kyle Dal Santo (Bolingbrook, Illinois) was tabbed as the Defensive Player of the Week.
Jambga started both games this past week for SIUE. His goal six minutes into the first overtime period Saturday lifted SIUE to a 1-0 win over the Ramblers and the MVC regular season title. The goal was his team-leading sixth of the year. Jambga appeared in 15 games without a goal as a freshman.
The weekly award is the second of the season for Jambga, who also earned the award October 12.
Dal Santo has played all but one half this season for the Cougars and recorded shutouts eight and nine this season with the pair of clean sheets. He was not credited with a save Tuesday against Eastern Illinois, but shined in Saturday's win.
Dal Santo made three saves against the Ramblers, including denying Kyle Thomson's penalty kick in the 86th minute preserving the scoreless tie and helping send the game to overtime, where the Cougars were victorious. Dal Santo lowered his goals against average to 0.50 for the year, which is just percentage points off the conference lead and is No. 6 in the NCAA. His save percentage of .830 leads the MVC and is 14th nationally.
The award is the first of Dal Santo's career.
The Cougars take the No. 1 seed into this week's MVC Tournament, hosted by SIUE, and will face either No. 4 Missouri State or No. 5 Loyola Friday at 6 p.m.
