Southern Illinois University Edwardsville's Mike Zaegel scored 70 seconds into overtime to give the Cougars a 2-1 win over Northern Kentucky in Great Lakes Valley Conference men's soccer on Sunday afternoon.
SIUE improved to 9-1 overall with a 4-0 mark in the GLVC. The Cougars have now won 15 straight GLVC regular season games. Northern Kentucky fell to 6-2-2 and 1-2-1 in the GLVC.
The goal was Zaegel's first of the season as the Cougars outshot the Norse 31-2 for the contest.
The Cougars fell behind 1-0 as Randy Walters scored for Northern Kentucky at the 6:31 mark of the first half. SIUE had to fight back to tie the game as Mike Banner netted his second goal in as many games with 12:56 left in the second half.
Ross Beveridge and Pete Cacciatore picked up the assists on the goals for the Cougars. SIUE notched its sixth straight win and its second overtime win this season, with the other being a 2-1 double overtime victory over Christian Brothers on August 29.
Northern Kentucky was led by goalkeeper Nate Madden as he made 14 saves for the game.
The Cougars' next action is Friday at Wisconsin-Parkside at 1:15. Then SIUE travels to St. Joseph's for a match on Sunday afternoon at noon.
