MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. – SIUE Golf Head Coach Derrick Brown was selected as the 2019 Ohio Valley Coach of the Year, headlining a quartet of SIUE award winners at the OVC Men's Golf Championship.
Brown earned the award after leading the Cougars to the best scoring average in the OVC for the second year in a row. SIUE captured two tournament championships, which is the most in a season in SIUE's Division I era. The Cougars garnered four other top-five finishes during the season. SIUE has registered 13 rounds at or below par, which also is the most in school history. The Cougars have a head-to-head record of 77-47-4 which includes a 16-6-2 record against OVC competition.
SIUE golfers Kyle Slattery and Conor Dore were each named to the All-OVC team, marking the second year in a row in which the Cougars had two representatives on the 10-member team. Freshman Brooks Jungbluth was named to the All-Newcomer team. He is the fourth SIUE golfer to be named to the All-Newcomer team.
"I am so happy for Kyle, Conor and Brooks for earning these OVC accolades," Brown said.
Slattery, a senior from Rockford, Illinois, earned selection for the second consecutive year. He entered the OVC tournament second in the OVC in scoring average at 71.8, which would be the lowest season scoring average in a single season at SIUE. Slattery won three tournaments, including SIUE's Derek Dolenc Invitational.
Dore, a senior from Chicago, was selected to the All-OVC team for the first time. He finished 12th in the OVC with a scoring average of 72.7, which would tie him for the third lowest average in a season at SIUE. Dore earned three top-10 finishes during the season.
"Kyle and Conor have been such a big part of our success over the past four years and it is only fitting that they are both on the All-OVC team as seniors," Brown added. "They have rewritten the SIUE record books and I am so proud of them both."
Jungbluth, from St. Joseph, Missouri, played in all 10 tournaments for SIUE. He finished the regular season with a scoring average of 74.6. He earned three top-20 finishes. His best finish was 11th at SIUE's Derek Dolenc Invitational.
"Brooks had a very good freshman year is very deserving of selection to the All-Newcomer team," Brown said. "He was a big part of our team. He has a bright future ahead of him and I look forward to watching it."
The Cougars are currently sixth after the first round of play at the OVC Championship. Round two gets underway Monday morning.
