EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE golf returns to the Ohio Valley Conference Championship, opening play Sunday for the first of three rounds.
The Cougars enter the tournament as the best scoring team in the OVC with an average of 290.4, just ahead of second-place Jacksonville State. SIUE is 16-6-1 in head-to-head to play against OVC teams this season.
The 54-hole tournament takes place on the Fighting Joe Course at The Shoals in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, which is part of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. The Fighting Joe will be par 72 with yardage of 7,258 for the Championship. This season marks the sixth consecutive year the tournament has been contested at The Shoals and the seventh time overall. The Championship also was held there in 2009.
"I feel really good about where we are as a team heading into the OVC Championship," SIUE Head Coach Derrick Brown said. "We have two of the best players in the OVC in my opinion with Kyle Slattery and Conor Dore and they both have three years of experience at this venue. We've been a deep team all year and it showed again with leading the OVC in team scoring average for the second year in a row."
The championship features all 11 golf-playing institutions in the OVC: Austin Peay, Belmont, Eastern Illinois, Eastern Kentucky, Jacksonville State, Morehead State, Murray State, SIUE, Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech and UT Martin.
Teams will play one 18-hole round each day Sunday-Tuesday. SIUE will pair with UT Martin and Tennessee State in the first round. First tee time for the Cougars is 8:50 a.m.
For the first time this season, teams are able to bring a sixth golfer who may be substituted into the lineup prior to a round.
SIUE's lineup for the Championship:
"Fighting Joe is a great golf course and provides a wonderful atmosphere for our Championship," Brown added. "We are excited to get down there and compete starting on Sunday morning."
