The 2017-18 season marks the 50th season of SIUE men's basketball. The men's basketball program began with the 1967-68 season, the first of three under the late Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer Harry Gallatin.
SIUE Head Coach Jon Harris is in his third season at the helm of the Cougars. The native of Edwardsville, Illinois, is 19-57 overall.
SIUE continues the OVC season and a four-game home stand. In six previous seasons, the Cougars have a 23-28 record in OVC games at Vadalabene Center.
David McFarland scored a season-best 22 points for the SIUE Cougars on Thursday, but Southeast Missouri overcame his fireworks to post an 86-74 win at the Vadalabene Center. The Redhawks rode the sizzling scoring touch of sophomore Denzel Mahoney to their victory. Mahoney celebrated his 20th birthday in style by scoring a career-high 36 points. Mahoney made 9 of 14 shots, including 5 of 7 shots from 3-point range. He also converted 13 of 15 free throws and grabbed seven rebounds. McFarland, a 6-4 junior, poured in all of his points in the second half to keep the Cougars within striking distance of the Redhawks. McFarland made 7 of 18 shots and hit 5 of 14 from 3-point range.
UT Martin has an 11-6 edge in the all-time series. The Cougars are 3-5 in home games against the Skyhawks. UT Martin has won the last four meetings in the series.
