The 2017-18 season marks the 50th season of SIUE men's basketball. The men's basketball program began with the 1967-68 season, the first of three under the late Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer Harry Gallatin.
SIUE Head Coach Jon Harris is in his third season at the helm of the Cougars. The native of Edwardsville, Illinois, is 16-53 overall.
SIUE opens its seventh Ohio Valley Conference schedule this week. All-time, the Cougars have a 30-66 record in six previous seasons in the league.
SIUE men's basketball's three-game winning streak came to an end Friday at the hands of Central Michigan. The Chippewas defeated the Cougars 70-52 Friday. Both teams struggled to find a rhythm on offense. The Cougars shot just 36.1 percent (22-61), while Central Michigan connected on only 33.9 percent (21-62) of its shots. The Cougars held a lead for nearly eight minutes to start the game. In a sign of things to come, Cecil Williams knocked down a pair of free throws to give CMU its first lead, at 13-11, with 10:37 left before halftime. A 9-0 run followed and helped the Chippewas take an 11-point lead into the half. SIUE never led the rest of the game.
The Cougars and Governors have met 11 pervious times. All 11 meetings have come in OVC play. Austin Peay has a 7-4 lead in the all-time series and has won the last five games in the series.
