The 2017-18 season marks the 50th season of SIUE men's basketball. The men's basketball program began with the 1967-68 season, the first of three under the late Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer Harry Gallatin.
SIUE Head Coach Jon Harris begins his third season at the helm of the Cougars. The native of Edwardsville, Illinois, is 12-46 in two seasons in charge.
SIUE rolled by Brescia 95-75 Sunday in its only exhibition game at the Vadalabene Center. No fewer than 10 Cougars scored and five reached double figures. Jalen Henry, Daniel Kinchen and Brandon Jackson combined for 47 points and 19 rebounds. Keenan Simmons (11 points) and Julian Torres (10 points) also pitched in for SIUE, which made 35 of 66 shots, including 9 of 29 threes. The Cougars outrebounded the Bearcats 51-34.
SIUE is 23-26 all-time in season openers. Head Coach Jon Harris is 2-0 in season openers during his time on the sideline. Last season, the Cougars picked up a 69-68 win at Hawaii. In 2015, SIUE defeated Arkansas State 79-70 at home.
SIUE has traveled to Purdue twice previously. Most recently, the Cougars dropped a 90-63 decision Dec. 22, 2009 to the No. 4 Boilermakers. It was SIUE's second season in transition to Division I. Mark Yelovich led the Cougars with 23 points. Purdue scored a 117-71 win over SIUE Dec. 1, 1971 when the Cougars were still a Division II program.
