No. 8 SIUE (11-19, 7-9) vs.
No. 5 Tennessee Tech (16-15, 9-7)
Wed., March 5, 6 p.m.
SIUE is making its first appearance at the OVC Tournament and first NCAA Division I postseason appearance.
ABOUT THE GOLDEN EAGLES
Tennessee Tech won four of its last five and six of its last eight OVC games to secure the No. 5 seed for the tournament. Senior Dennis Ogbe leads the team in scoring and rebounding. He is averaging 10.8 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. He is one of three TTU players averaging at least 10 points per game.
Down by as many as 21 points, SIUE mounted a furious comeback attempt, only to come up short, falling 64-63 to Tennessee Tech at the Eblen Center Jan. 11. After a layup by Donivine Stewart got the Cougars within one, 64-63, with 20 seconds left, TTU's Shirmane Thomas was fouled on the ensuing play. Thomas missed a pair of free throws. The second of which was rebounded by SIUE's Maurice Wiltz. Wiltz fed the ball to Stewart who weaved through traffic to get to the basket. His finger roll missed as did Ray Lester's putback attempt as time expired.
Tonight marks the seventh meeting between the two schools. All seven have come since 2010. The Golden Eagles won the first game this year, in Cookeville, Tenn. The Cougars won the last meeting in Edwardsville 58-54 Jan. 11, 2013.
The Cougars connected on 61.2 percent (30-49) of their shots in the road win at UT Martin. It was their highest percentage of the year against a Division I opponent. SIUE shot better than 50 percent in six OVC games.
