OPENING TIP: SIUE opened its 46th season of men's basketball with a 99-65 loss at Arkansas Friday. Tim Johnson led the Cougars with 13 points and six rebounds off the bench. Maurice Wiltz and Donivine Stewart each scored nine points. SIUE took a 10-7 lead early before Arkansas went on a 10-0 run and never trailed again.
OPENING NIGHT: SIUE fell to 1-6 in season openers under Head Coach Lennox Forrester. The Cougars haven't started a season 1-0 since defeating Harris Stowe 90-61 to open the 2007-08 season. In six previous home openers under Forrester, the Cougars are 4-2.
TONIGHT'S OPPONENT: Saint Louis is the defending Atlantic 10 Conference champions. The Billikens were 28-7 a year ago, setting a school record for wins. SLU advanced to the third round of the NCAA tournament before falling to Oregon. The Bills defeated Southeast Missouri Friday 87-64 in the season opener. Saint Louis trailed 35-34 at half before outscoring the Redhawks 53-29 in the second half. Grandy Glaze scored 16 points and added 10 rebounds in the win.
SERIES STUFF: Tonight's meeting is the ninth meeting in the all-time series but the first to come in Edwardsville. SIUE is 1-7 in the series. This is the second time the two schools have met as Division I opponents. The Billikens defeated the Cougars 68-41 in last year's matchup in St. Louis.
AGAINST THE ATLANTIC 10: Last year's meeting between SIUE and SLU is the only time the Cougars have faced a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference.
