EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Jerome Jones (St. Louis) and Kris Davis (Detroit, Mich.) were honored Monday as the Ohio Valley Conference's Newcomer and Freshman of the Week, respectively. The pair was honored, following a week in which SIUE began its first-ever OVC season with wins over Tennessee Tech and Jacksonville State.
Jones, a 6-foot, 6-inch junior forward, led SIUE in both games, averaging 18.5 points per game for the week. Jones scored 20 points on 8 of 11 shooting in the conference opener Thursday against Tennessee Tech. It was his second 20-point game of the year. He scored 17 to lead the way in the Cougars' 66-61 win over Jacksonville State Saturday, where he was perfect from the free throw line, including hitting four in the final 29 seconds to help seal the victory over the Gamecocks. Jones has scored in double figures in nine consecutive games, and leads SIUE in scoring (13.2) and rebounding (7.1)
Davis, a 6-2 freshman guard, was third in scoring for the week, averaging 15 points over the two conference wins. In Thursday's win over Tennessee Tech, Davis was the second-leading scorer with 19 points. Davis connected on his first five three-point attempts and finished 5 of 6 from long range. He scored 11 points in Saturday's win over Jacksonville State and hit both of his three-point attempts. Davis currently leads the NCAA in three-point percentage (.641).
Jones and Davis join Eastern Kentucky's Jaron Jones who was tabbed as the Conference's Player of the Week. The awards are the first Ohio Valley weekly awards for the men's basketball program.
The Cougars continue their inaugural OVC season, hosting Eastern Illinois Wednesday night. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
