EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.- Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's basketball Head Coach Lennox Forrester has announced that Charles Joy (O'Fallon) has signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball for the Cougars beginning next season.
"We are very excited about Charles becoming part of our program," Forrester said. "We have been recruiting Charles since day one and have gotten to know him and his family very well."
Joy is a 6-4 forward who plays at O'Fallon High School for Coach Rick Gibson. He averaged 7.8 points and 5.8 rebounds last season, helping the Panthers to a 30-4 record and a fourth-place finish at the Class 4A state tournament. Joy also plays for The Southwest Illinois Jets AAU program under Dana Morgan.
"He is a very bright young man who has a great future ahead of him both in the classroom and on the floor," Forrester added. "He has played under great coaches in Rick Gibson at O'Fallon and Dana Morgan with the Jets who have given him great guidance on and off the floor." Joy was named Honorable Mention All-State as a junior by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association.
Forrester said he believes that Joy's time at O'Fallon has prepared him well for his time in a Cougar uniform.
"O'Fallon has been very competitive against the best teams in the state for the past two seasons," he said. "I am very excited to have Charles here at SIUE."
The Cougars open the 2010-2011 season Friday when they host IPFW in an 8 p.m. game at the Vadalabene Center on the SIUE Campus.
