EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- It's an exciting time for Southern Illinois University Edwardsville as the men's basketball team embarks on its first full-fledged NCAA Division I schedule, announced today by head coach Lennox Forrester.
The Cougars are a member of the Ohio Valley Conference but will be first rotated into the league schedule in the 2011-2012 season. Coach Forrester has put together a 2009-2010 schedule similar to those without a conference while the Cougars await their inaugural season in OVC play. The Cougars play a broad-based schedule that will take the team to nine different states including an exciting home slate at the Vadalabene Center.
The home schedule includes 13 contests, including in-state rival Illinois State University at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 15. Future Ohio Valley Conference rival Murray State University also travels to Edwardsville on Wednesday, Dec. 30.
"I'm excited about the schedule. We expect challenges along the way with regional opponents and some nationally-known names. We are especially excited about playing Illinois State, a well-respected Missouri Valley Conference team that has competed the last several seasons at a very high level. To get them to come to the Vadalabene Center is very exciting for us," said Forrester.
The travel schedule includes regular-season games against the University of Illinois (Nov. 13) and Purdue University (Dec. 22). The Cougars have road contests with OVC partners Morehead State University (Jan. 19), UT Martin (Jan. 25), Murray State University (Jan. 27) and Southeast Missouri State University (Feb. 22).
SIUE also plays two teams to be announced at the Drake Invitational in Des Moines, Iowa, on Dec. 4-5.
The 2009-2010 season kicks off at the Vadalabene Center with a pair of home exhibition contests against MacMurray College (Nov. 4) and Illinois College (Nov. 7).
The rest of the home schedule also includes: Lipscomb (Nov. 28), IUPU-Ft. Wayne (Dec. 1), Loyola (Dec. 20), UMKC (Dec. 28), Milwaukee (Jan. 5), Robert Morris of Springfield (Jan. 21), South Dakota (Feb. 5), North Dakota (Feb. 7), and Hannibal LaGrange (Feb. 25).
SIUE road trips also include: Evansville (Nov. 18), Ball State (Nov. 21), Lipscomb (Dec. 10), Middle Tennessee State (Dec. 13), South Dakota (Jan. 9), Kennesaw State (Jan. 12), North Dakota (Feb. 18) and IUPU-Ft. Wayne (Feb. 23).
Forrester said times and dates of games are subject to change because of television contracts, which is common among NCAA Division I schools. Several games have yet to set starting times.
