EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Anthony Mitchell, a former honorable mention All-State men's basketball player at East St. Louis High School, has made the commitment to play for Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
Mitchell, a 6-foot, 4-inch, 215-pound small forward, will have three years of eligibility at SIUE after signing scholarship award letter. He sat out last season at national power Highland Community College under former SIUE assistant coach Pete Norman. He played eight games during the 2007-2008 season at Saint Louis University.
"We are thrilled to get a player of Anthony's caliber," said SIUE coach Lennox Forrester. "He is an excellent rebounder and has the ability to score inside and out."
Mitchell averaged 14.5 points and 11.1 rebounds as a senior at East St. Louis. He led the Flyers a 23-5 record and a tie in the mighty Southwestern Conference, advancing to the semifinals of the Class AA regional tournament.
Forrester said Mitchell, a second team All-Metro selection by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch as a senior at East St. Louis, gives him options in his lineup.
"Defensively, with his strength, he has the versatility to guard a number of positions," said Forrester. "Anthony is a very good student who will represent our program in a first class manor on and off the floor. Being from the St. Louis area, he also will be a familiar face to our fans."
