CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Aamir McCleary hit a off-balance three-pointer with 2.9 seconds left as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's basketball closed out the year with a 70-69 victory at Southeast Missouri State.
SIUE's Nikola Bundalo missed a pair of free throws with eight seconds left with the Cougars down by two. The second miss was rebounded by Mark Yelovich and deflected to McCleary, who hit the game-winner from the left baseline.
The Cougars won their second straight game and improved to 4-11 while SEMO dropped to 3-10.
"I was proud with how they didn't panic down the stretch," said SIUE Coach Lennox Forrester.
SIUE was down by as much as 11 points in the first half, including a 10-1 run to start the game. The Cougars pulled within three by halftime.
Mark Yelovich, who scored 14 of his points in the second half, tied the score in the first 30 seconds of the second half on his first points of the game, a three-pointer from the top of the key. SIUE rallied to take a 13-point lead over the next nine minutes of the second half only watch it evaporate over the next five minutes.
LaMont Russell tied the game 61-61 with 5:23 to play on a fast-break layup. The two teams traded baskets down the stretch.
SIUE's John Edmison posted a career-high 19 points, scoring 13 in the first half. Edmison also connected on a career-high four three-pointers.
"That's the beauty of our offense that a different guy can step up each night," said Forrester.
Calvin Williams led the Redhawks with 22 points. Kenard Moore added 19.
SIUE now travels to Ames, Iowa, to take on Iowa State in a 7 p.m. game Saturday.
