GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- South Dakota hit 15 three-pointers and hit 66.2 percent of its three-pointers in a 116-79 victory over Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in the consolation game of the UND Independents Tournament.
SIUE, which closed out the men's basketball season with a 10-20 record, got off to a strong start with a 14-5 lead five minutes into the game. Three-pointers by Mark Yelovich and John Edmison led the charge.
The Coyotes bounced back with a 13-4 run of its own to tie the score five minutes later, capped off by a three-pointer from three-pointers by Louie Krogman.
"They made shots," said SIUE coach Lennox Forrester. "Even some that were off-balance went in."
South Dakota held a 13-point lead by halftime and didn't let up in the second half by hitting 10 treys just in the second half.
Dylan Grimsley turned in a 30-point effort, includng five three-pointers. USD, which ended the season with a 20-9 record, hit 15 of 27 shots from beyond the three-point line.
"Our defense just wasn't there to take away the three-pointer," said
Yelovich led four SIUE scorers in double figures with 16 points. Yelovich shot 7 of 12 from the field. SIUE shot 47 percent from the field as a team.
Aaron Garriott, Barry Wellington and Edmison also scored in double figures for the Cougars.
