EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. - After a 13-point first half deficit, the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's basketball team came back to defeat Rockhurst 72-65 Saturday at the Vadalabene Center.
The Cougars, who shot 50 percent from the field in the second half, picked up the intensity after a tough first half. SIUE was down 40-27 at halftime.
With the win, SIUE went to 11-8 overall and 7-5 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference while Rockhurst dropped to 11-8 overall and 5-6 in the GLVC.
SIUE was led by Mike Hardiek's 27 points and seven rebounds. Hardiek's composure was key for the Cougars has he shot a perfect 10 of 10 from the free throw line.
Anthony Jones and Jeremy Gathing also broke double-figures in scoring with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Jones also had eight rebounds for the game.
Another factor in the win was J.B. Jones who was just shy of a double-double for SIUE with 10 assists and eight points.
Rockhurst was led by Aaron Hill, who had 20 points, and Kevin Martin, who put down 15. The Hawks shot 8 of 12 from theee-point range in the first half but cooled off to hit 3 of 9 in the second half from beyond the arc.
The Cougars will play next against Oakland City in a non-conference game Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Vadalabene Center.
