SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Garrett Thomas pumped in seven three-pointers and scored 25 points as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville downed St. Edward's 84-79 in the opening game of the Bud Light Holiday Classic.
Thomas came off the bench to lead the Cougar offense. Derrick Fomby scored 17 points, including 11 of 12 from the free throw line. Ron Heflin added 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting.
The Cougars, 4-5, play Incarnate Word on Saturday in a 7:30 p.m. and hope to make their way back to the .500 mark before returning to the Vadalabene Center next Thursday to face Truman State.
St. Edward's led the Cougars at halftime 34-32. Bradley Burdick led four players in double figures for St. Edward's with a game-high 27 points.
SIUE came out on fire in the second half. The Cougars hit 58 percent of their field goals in the half and won what became a full-court running game. SIUE used its three-pointer as a key weapon, hitting 11 of 30. The Cougars took more than half of their total shot from beyond the arc.
