Marty Perry pumped in 27 points and made his first nine shots of the game as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville defeated Monmouth College 76-71 at the Vadalabene Center.
SIUE, 1-0, picked up nine assists from transfer point guard Derrick Fomby. The junior also was in double figures with 10 points.
Tim Bauersachs and Rob Baumgardner, a pair of freshmen playing in the first collegiate game, added 13 and 10 points, respectively.
SIUE took a 40-35 lead at halftime and exchanged the lead with Monmouth seven times before putting away the Scots. The Cougars shot 65 percent in the second-half and took the lead for good at 1:04 on a three-pointer by Garrett Thomas.
Monmouth picked up 22 points from Kenny Spranger. The Scots were especially strong on the defensive end, forcing SIUE to commit 27 turnovers.
SIUE plays the second of a four-game homestand Tuesday when they play host to Delta State (Miss.) for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
