Southern Illinois University Edwardsville nearly it pulled off.
Down 40-20 at halftime, SIUE surged to within two points with 14 seconds left only to watch as UMSL's Jim Schelich connected on free throws with 12 seconds left to seal the 70-66 victory Saturday night at the Vadalabene Center.
Marty Perry scored 18 of his 21 points in the second half for SIUE (7-16, 3-14). Ron Heflin tied Perry for scoring honors as he recorded his first double-double of the season with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
Deryn Carter powered the UMSL offense with a game-high 25 points. Schelich, Doug Lee, and Derrick Redd each had 10 points for the Rivermen (9-12, 5-11 GLVC).
UMSL rallied to a 20-point lead at halftime only to watch it slowly disappear in the second half. SIUE hit 15 of 28 shots from the field, including five three-pointers but couldn't overcome the deficit which was as high as 22 points early in the second half.
SIUE now sits idle until Saturday when it plays host to Lewis in a 7:30 p.m. contest.
