EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – After winning its first Ohio Valley Conference series of the year this past weekend, SIUE baseball steps out of conference to take on Missouri, of the Southeastern Conference, Wednesday night in Columbia, Missouri.
The Cougars, who won two of three from Belmont over the weekend, are 7-18 overall. Missouri, which took a series win on the road at Auburn last weekend, is 21-7 overall and 14-1 at home.
The Cougars and Tigers will face one another for the 20th time. Mizzou holds a 15-4 advantage in the all-time series. Since 2009, when SIUE moved to Division I, the Tigers are 4-1 in the series. SIUE earned a 7-2 win over at Mizzou April 13, 2011.
"It will be good midweek action for us," SIUE Head Coach Sean Lyons said. "We'll head over to Mizzou and get a little measuring stick as to where we are."
Lyons said the process for his team doesn't change because of the opponent.
"The goal is always to play good, clean baseball," he said. "That's what we've been trying to do. We want to clean it up a bit, play solid baseball and see what happens."
After dropping 12 in a row, the Cougars bounced back to score their first-ever series win against Belmont last weekend.
"It's always about starts on the mound, playing good defense and getting timely hitting," he said. "On Friday and Saturday we were able to get all three of those."
Redshirt-freshman David Llorens will make his fourth consecutive mid-week start. He is 0-2 with a 3.86 earned run average. He struck out a career-high eight hitters last Wednesday against Saint Louis.
"Last week against SLU he was really sharp," Lyons said of Llorens. "We want to see how he continues to grow and develop as a pitcher."
Missouri will send junior left-hander Tyler LaPlante against the Cougars. LaPlante is 3-1 with a 1.74 ERA in four appearances (three starts).
