EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Ohio Valley Conference plays resumes for SIUE baseball, which travels to Cape Girardeau, Missouri for a three-game series at Southeast Missouri.
For the third straight weekend, weather has played havoc with the schedule. Friday's series opener has been moved up to 1 p.m. to avoid rain later in the day.
Game two is set for a 2 p.m. start Saturday, while the finale is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday.
SIUE and Southeast Missouri have met 45 previous times. The Redhawks hold a 25-20 advantage all-time in the series. The Cougars are just 1-11 in Cape Girardeau since moving to Division I in 2009.
SIUE is 5-13 overall and 1-5 in OVC play. The Cougars team earned run average is 5.50, which is fourth best in the OVC.
"That facet has been good," SIUE Head Coach Sean Lyons said. "They have given us a chance late in games. Now, we want to get all facets of the game where they need to be."
The Cougars have struggled at the plate. Their team batting average is last in the league at .227.
"We're just trying to stay the course and be consistent with what our thoughts and our philosophies are on hitting," Lyons added.
SIUE was scheduled to play a Wednesday game at Evansville. The contest was postponed because of field conditions at Evansville.
"Getting an extra day of practice was good for us," Lyons said. "Guys were able to swing the bats and have some fun. That's what this is all about.
"Guys have a tendency to press when they're struggling," Lyons continued. "We want them to step back and have a little fun. It was good to see smiles on the guys' faces."
The Redhawks are 7-15 overall and 4-2 in the OVC. SEMO's batting average is fourth in the league at .277. The Redhawks' pitching staff has a 5.56 ERA, good for fifth in the OVC.
"Southeast is off to a good start in the league," Lyons said. "We're facing another road series. It is always tough to go on the road and win games. This will be a good matchup and a good weekend."
