RUSTON, La. – After going 1-2 on opening weekend at Southeastern Louisiana, SIUE baseball returns to Louisiana for a three-game series at Louisiana Tech.
The Cougars are in the midst of a season-opening 11-game road swing.
"This is another great venue for baseball so we are excited about the weekend," SIUE Head Coach Sean Lyons said. "We look forward to the opportunity for our team to improve upon our mistakes from last week."
The Bulldogs are 3-2 to start the season and won their home opener Tuesday over McNeese State. Louisiana Tech finished 36-20 last season and were 22-7 at home. The Bulldogs sport a team earned run average of 1.19 in their first five games.
"They have several new players from last year's team, but they have played well to start the season," Lyons said of the Cougars' opponent. "They have pitched very well in the first five games, and it will be a good test for our lineup."
Lyons has adjusted his starting rotation, moving lefthander Ryan Byrd into the Saturday starting spot. Nelson Martz (0-1) will start Friday with Kenny Serwa (0-0) slated to start Sunday. Serwa tossed five innings and did not get a decision last Sunday in SIUE's win over Southeastern Louisiana.
"We have several new faces who are competing for weekend rotation spots," Lyons explained. "This week, Ryan Byrd is getting an opportunity to show what he can do. He is a lefthander who gives a different look at the opponent. We have this weekend and next to figure out how the rotation will shake out for Ohio Valley Conference play."
Lyons said the Cougars' depth continues to be a strong point.
"We are still trying to find the right mix both offensively and defensively," he said. "We have some versatility on the infield which allows us to mix and match a little bit to find the 'hot bat' or right chemistry on defense."
The series is scheduled to start with a 6 p.m. game Friday and continue with a 2 p.m. start Saturday and a 1 p.m. first pitch Sunday.
